trouble with Transferring URL

    Hello,

    I have read the instructions for transferring a wordpress site to another url here:

    Codex Moving WordPress

    Accordingly, I went into the setting and changed the WordPress address (URL) and the Site address (URL) to point to my new domain. Then I saved the changes and copied the whole wordpress folder from the old domain to the desktop of my mac. Next, I replaced the wp-config.php so it reflects the mysql data for the new url. Finally, I uploaded the whole thing to the new url.

    When I first did this, I was prompted to create a new wordpress site with a username and password. Not knowing how else to proceed, I went ahead and did this. As can be imagined, a new blank site was created and once at the dashboard there is not a trace of the content from the site I transferred.

    Trouble is, I can’t go back to the old dashboard because when I try to log in, it doesn’t take the old username and password, but instead points me to the new url where I created a new account.

    I would like to avoid rebuilding the site from scratch, however I am stuck.

    I’m not even sure what to ask here except for general help! I tried to go into the new account dashboard and point it to the old site, however this did not get me anywhere…

    Any help would be appreciated, especially as the site is now effectively down.

    Did you create a new database on the new domain and import the database backup from the old site?

    esmi,

    I just took the entire contents of the wordpress folder from the old domain and copied it over into the root folder of the new domain (with the exception being the wp-config.php file which I customized for the new domain).

    One of my current problems is that I can no longer access the dashboard for the old domain because when I try to log in, I am re-directed to the new domain which I mistakenly created a new username + password for.

    Your site’s content is the database – not in the wordpress folder. Try reviewing Moving_WordPress again.

    I have reviewed the moving_WordPress page again and it seems that I followed the step-by-step instructions to move your WordPress site to a new location on the same server: Unfortunately, I have moved my WordPress site to a new URL which means it is on a different server, thus I have followed the wrong instructions.

    What I need to do is on the old domain, go to ‘Manage -> Export’ and then on the new domain, go to ‘Manage -> Import’.

    Unfortunately, I can no longer access the old domain as it points to the new domain (as I explained above, on the old domain I changed the WordPress address (URL) and the Site address (URL) to point to my new domain). Now whenever I try and log into wordpress/wp-admin, it automatically re-routes to the new domain.

    Is there some way I can get around this? I have the old database on my desktop -is there a php file that I can open and then change back to how it was before I changed the settings for the WordPress address and Site address to the new domain?

    You need to use the hosting management panel on the old hosting account to access the old database and make a backup.

    Esmi,

    I cannot access the hosting management panel on the old hosting account because whenever I try and log in, I’m re-routed to the new host.

    Anyway I can overcome this?…
