Trouble with Blockquote

I’m trying to use

in my site but I’m having trouble getting it to validate. Below is an example of howI’m entering a post:

blah blah blah

some text here

blah blah blah

I expected the text to be formatted with tags around the “blah blah blah”s and with a tag right inside the blockquote. The “blah blah blah”s correctly get the tags, but my blockquote ends up looking like this:

some text here

This, obviously, doesn’t validate because the p shoould be inside the blockquote. Can someone tell me how I should be entering the post so that it formats correctly (and, if I need to, what edits I need to make to the wpautop function)?
