• Is there a recommended method or plugin for moving a WP website from one domain to another?

I’m using a WP theme to set up and test my new webpage at http://hardmonkey.com/ . Then, once it is more or less operational, I want to move it to http://mattelmore.org

The HardMonkey directory is inside the mattelmore.org directory, and I first thought that it would just be a question of moving the files up into the main mattelmore.org directory, but now I suspect that I will have problems with the permalinks and the embedded links in the menus.

For example, the “Translations” link under the Services Menu points to http://hardmonkey.com/translations right now. But when I move it all to the ultimate destination site, I’ll want the permalink to be http://mattelmore.org/translations. And, of course, I’ll want the Services Menu link to point to that, not to the test site.

Does this mean I’ll have to go in and re-edit every page once I transfer? Or even just recreate each page anew in the destination site?

I hope not. If there is some kind of plugin that will simply update the within-site links and permalink names, that would be pretty nice.

    Excellent. Thanks keesiemeijer.

    Next related question:

If I want to clean out the main directory before the swap, can I delete all the files and folders except for the WP directories? Or, should I keep index.htm or something like that?

    My plan was this:

    1) Delete ALL the files in the main directory, EXCEPT for the HardMonkey folder, where my test site is located.
    2) Install WP in the main directory for the site mattelmore.org. (currently WP is installed in hardmonkey.com)
    3) Transfer the files from the test site to the main directory, following the instructions in the “Read This” link above.

Does that seem like the right plan? Or are there some files/folders that I should keep for the transfer?

Okay, so maybe that’s not the way to go …

Back to the link keesiemeijer provided, it tells me to back up the .htaccess file, and in line 10:

“If you are using Permalinks, go to the Administration > Settings > Permalinks panel and update your Permalink structure to your .htaccess file, which should be in the same directory as the main index.php file.”

But, there are no options like that in the Permalinks Panel.

I’m using the control panel at the provider’s website. Maybe I should install WP on the computer and work it from there. (?)
