Top/Bottom widget areas

    HI, new to wordpress.

    I am using the pro version of pure & simple theme. It has the following top and bottom widget areas

    Top 1 to 4
    Feature Top 1 to 4
    Inset Top 1 to 4
    Inset Bottom 1 to 4
    Feature Bottom 1 to 4
    Bottom 1 to 4

    Other than top & bottom, what is the difference between them please.

    Also if I do not use a particular area, say feature top, then there is always a gap where it would be which looks poor. How do I get round this please
