It began about 2 weeks ago. All of a sudden I get major spammage to my WP blog to particularly 4-5 entries only. In just 1 day, I have about 400 comments from names like “flkjfoqpd” and emails from names like “sgklwotih@gmail.com” with urls to geocities and aol pages showcasing pictures and probably some virus or what-not attached.

I’ve blacklisted geocities and aol.com and it’s working, but if someone could tell me what’s going on? And also other ways of blocking these spam comments? (In case the spamming begins to come from urls -other- than geo or aol.)
Also, does my WP have a bug or something? Or is this a problem host side? (I’m hosted on dreamhost.)

Thank you for your time. Any ideas and suggestions welcome.

Spam is just a fact of life. People (aka bastards) run automated systems to send spam to webpages.

The short of it is that you need spam blocker plugins. Akismet and Bad Behavior are the two I use and recommend. Spam Karma 2 also gets positive reviews.

Akismet actually comes with WordPress, all you have to do is to activate it, go to WordPress.com and get an API key, and then put the API key into your Akismet configuration page.

    More info about Akismet.
