Thumbnail problem

I’m having a problem with keeping the images on my front page as thumbnails. They are supposed to be thumbnail size no matter what, however recently, they have been whatever size they choose. Why? And I tried a regenerate thumbnail plugin and it says there is an internal error. Why? Please help me establish consistency so that all my post pictures are thumbnails on the front page. Thank you.
