• I’m new to the blogging world and would like to learn how to create my blog correctly. I just installed WP and with that I have two themes, Default and Classic.

Question, if I wanted to change the header image in these themes would I be able to? I tried and when I pressed “Update file” the text just changed back into it’s original state. I’m probably missing out on another step or two, or a few, but WP doesn’t fully explain (or I just don’t understand) what I need to do to successfully customize something on my own. Any help is appreciated.

If it is impossible to edit the theme, does that mean I have to create an entire new theme by myself? With all the little files included? I want my blog to be unique with different images and color than the theme provided. I have experience with web development which includes html and the use of dreamweaver. After trying to read WP’s help and guide pages I just have myself more confused as to what to look for and what to change.

Again, any help is appreciated. Thank you.

  • 1. You can edit any template file in a theme – just don’t do it with the online editor! The reason: to make those file editable online, you need to change the permissions to 666, which means you leave it wide open for hacking.

The correct way to do it: on your computer in a plain text editor (after making a backup copy) and then upload the file(s) to your server via FTP.

    2. Try to get other themes: scroll up > Extend > Themes

    Some reading:

I am using the default theme but I just downloaded a different theme and installed it to the directory it is supposed to go to. Then I went into the settings area of the admin, saw a drop down to choose another one, I did then I refresh my browser and the default theme is still there. not sure what’s wrong.

Thanks for the replies, ‘you can’t edit themes using the online editor’, haha, that would be very useful information.

Scott: I wanted to edit a part of a theme, not change the theme itself.
