you have to click on the actual word not just the bar, in order to activate these. I thought these were supposed to be tabs, not a column of buttons that are fullwidth

Can you disable all your other plugins and test the tab again? If that does not work can you test a different theme like WordPress default theme Twenty Fourteen?

apparently it is a conflict with the well-known Duplicator plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/duplicator/ which we use on many sites for moving back and forth from devel to live

they’ll probably say the same thing I’m thinking in my head, and not to hone to fine a point on it, but namely, “why doesn’t the author just contact us directly?” 🙂
