Sub category question?

    Having installed the sidebar widget I realized it’s not at all what I needed. Plain and simple, how do you categorize posts like the following:

    Category1(10)
    Category2(19)
    Category3(13)
    Category4(5)
    Category5(8)

    …etc

    So that only main categories are displayed on the main page, with the amount of posts within each main category indicated as a number within parentheses after the main category title?
    This seems to be a common blog feature. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish it?
