• Hi wondering about something… have some different topics that I would like to keep a part of my same domain (24hrknight.com… nothing there yet really)

Question is, can I use the same wordpress to make different sections show up in different sub directories and sub domains or do I need to set up completely separate wordpress installations for each subdir and subdomain?

ie only posts about cars show up on cars.24hrknight.com or 24hrknight.com/cars… anyone know how to do this with one big blog that I manage centrally? Or will I need many different wordpress installations? (hoping not… more databases, upload, configuring, plugin installation etc… this stuff takes me forever to set up)

Thank you very much I’m hoping someone can help me with this question.

  • well, first you better learn about categories and permalinks. Because if your main blog has the category “Cars” and the permalink yoursite.com/cars/ Then you must not create the directory /cars/ in your server, or it will conflict.

So one way to divide your site is by Category. (You can also have parent-child sub categories, like Cars = corvettes, VW, etc)

You can make a different Category Template for each category, such as putting cars on the cars category.

However, if you are like me, you want completely separate blogs that don’t crossover at all. If you’re on your cars blog, you want the Search to only search the cars section. You want 10 categories under Cars, and maybe sub-cats under those.

To do this you normally need separate installs.

Here is a page about it, but the page is confusingly out-dated, although it has the link to the winning answer:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_Multiple_Blogs

You’ll learn there is another program called WP-MU. But it gets complicated.

But — the great news is, I found another way, that was just developed in October 2006. I am using it now for 6 blogs. I started 1 week ago. It’s amazing. Read this & try it,

I went through every link in the Codex page, and the best is this method, for me. It depends on your needs tho, check the other methods listed too.

ALSO next time please make a better subject-line so people know your topic of your question.

    Hope this helps

Thank you for the reply, yes I didn’t know how to fit the question in the subject line it was just getting too long!!!

I will check this out… basically I don’t want the categories mixing on the home page… i want to keep them separate but on the same domain.

well, u should be explained that you can Hide categories from your homepage, yet it is still with only 1 normal blog. You just “exclude” the category from the homepage code. If you choose this method. To me this would be more complicated and less flexible, but it can be done.

I think you might still want the totally separate installs, which, that last link I posted really explains a good method (and explains why & what you get), and it works!

    Heya,

Yes I DLed this guys thingie… I’m a little unsure about me being able to implement this myself (so far it has been a stretch for me to hack my way through this), but I will take a look and hope for the best! If all else fails I know I can successfully install WP, so worst case scenario I can install it in several different folders… I just thought if I can manage it all in one place with one login ID then it would save a lot of time and I would be more inclined to update all of them more.

    Ok wish me luck lol!!!

well just post back here, or better on that guy’s site’s Comments, if you have a problem with it. His method is really so easy and cool.

For me the confusing thing was just how to create the symbolic links on my host/server… I just asked my host how and they offered to do it for me. 🙂
