Static Page cannot select Home

This seems extremely basic, but I cannot get the Home link to attach to a page. When I installed this theme, it created a Home custom link to my root, but it did not create a page. Therefore, I cannot select Home as my static home page? Home does not appear in the pulldown for Customize Theme/Home page settings.
What is the purpose of that created Home link? If I add a page titled Home, I then have two Home links and one page titled home. What is going on?

Somehow, having two Home links resolved itself. In the Customizer, Homepage I was able to select the Home page that I created in Pages. Now that page has become the Home page and has the custom (root) URL associated with it. But I still don’t understand why the theme created the Home URL without a page to associate it with.
