Special header for front page

I want to have a header saying “latest news” on the top of the front page — and only on the front page. I put it in the template, but it now shows on all pages — and it just doesn’t make sense on archive pages!

I’m thinking that one of those nifty “php if” thingies would do, but don’t have a clue how to write it. Or maybe there’s some other embarrassingly simple way to do this that I haven’t thought of.
