A fix that IMO is more effective than blacklisting can be found here, if you are prepared to modify a php file. In effect, it changes the default registration process and inserts a mini-Turing test to ensure that there is someone on the other end of the line.

I found a plugin that puts a Captcha up on the registration form it’s called CapCC and you can find it here http://fuctweb.com/2007/06/15/capcc/ seems to work well.
Not one spam registration since I installed the plugin above a few days ago! I’m happy!
