Usually WordPress creates three sizes for each image – the original, a medium one and a thumbnail. This number may be increased by some slider or gallery plugins or even themes. You can delete the extra images if you are sure which are the required images. Otherwise some size images may not appear in your site. If you do not have too many images, you can edit each post by deleting the images associated with it and re-inserting the images for each post.
I have posted weekly for 2.5 years so I have about 150 unique images and a ton of duplicate ones. Is there a way to figure out which images are safe to delete?
Thanks, –Jeff
You may try a plugin like: http://wordpress.org/plugins/dnui-delete-not-used-image-wordpress/
NOTE: Backup your entire site first. It is better to use the plugin on your site setup as test installation or on your computer so that you do not delete essential images.
Many thanks for your suggestions!
I just contacted Bluehost to refresh my memory on how to
set up subdomain so I can have a duplicate of website to test
things on before I put them on original domain.
I actually purchased a new plugin to do this:WP Simulator,
but haven’t used it yet.
