do you own the mywebsite.com domain you are referring to? Is it routed to your home IP?
Is this for the purposes of making your site externally viewable?
I believe you can change your url to anything you want for internal purposes, by editing your hosts file I think, along with the WP general settings. But if you want to use a real domain name you have to own it and route it. Or else use your external IP for those settings, or a DNS service like dynDNS
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes I do own the mywebsite.com domain and it will be routed to my home IP as I have a server running at home.
The site will definitely be available to the outside world eventually.
Another query I have though, currently all my pages point to src=”http://localhost:8888/mywebsite/wp-content/……”
When changing the site URL to my new http://www.mywebsite.com, will this be reflected in the above src path as well as everywhere else I make reference to my new domain, instead of using localhost:8888/mywebsite?
Thanks.
I simply want to purchase a domain name for my site; leave my whole WordPress blog where it is (files and all); and then use my regular domain name (i.e. example.com) as the URL for my WordPress blog. No moving nothing, no codes, just this is where you find me.
However, since I have sent some links out using the lengthy WordPress blog name (which is from Network Solutions), if people use that original URL, I want them to be able to get to the same place without a problem.
Lastly, my main concern is search engines. If I use the above setup, will the search engines be confused?
Thanks to all in advance for HELP!!! Smile.
Hi msprecha – perhaps would’ve been better if you started your own thread on your question.
Really hope someone gets back to me on my post before msprecha.
Thanks.
