single category as index.php

hi – i’ve read through this: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/10759 , but can’t get anything to work – i can’t find “$blog = 1;” to change and add any of the or know where to post the:

if (!isset($cat)) {
$cat = “X”;
} the category

i’m using 1.5.2 – any help?
