Simple Membership payment button not working

I am trying to set up a membership website, and have gone through online tutorials to set this up. When click the first large paypal button, I get the Paypal error: “Things don’t appear to be working at the moment. Please try again later.”

When clicking the smaller button, it takes me to the payment option within Paypal, and I enter card info to test, but after submitting payment it says something is not working.

Now one potential thing that could impact this is that the email used on my credit card is the same email attached to the linked paypal account. Would this mess it up? Otherwise I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
