• I am currently using my sidebar Links list as a type of miniblog, storing interesting or helpful links to sites I find. In the back of my head I have the nagging sensation that Links weren’t really set up so much for this type of use, but it is VERY convenient because a) they store all the information I need, and b) they are all set up & ready to go. So anyway, in my quest to set up Links-as-miniblog, here are my questions:

Is there an easy way to set up an RSS feed for the Links? I know it is probably possible to copy and hack the existing wp-rss2.php page, but it looks a little daunting so I was wondering if anyone else had done it and could shed some light…

Is my thinking flawed in using Links for this type of thing? I have set up a Page to view all Links posted, and when I get some time I want to look at setting it up a little like the archive categories page, where you can view by category and the results are paged. Is this possible?

I have read other posts about setting up separate blogs and then importing them into the sidebar, but I would like to avoid that if possible. You can see my current setup in action at http://design.sneak.co.nz

  • what some people do is they set up another external WP blog or subscribe to http://del.icio.us/ . by setting up another wp blog you can parse the feeds from the other blog and show them on your main blog

Yeah – I’ve read about it, but I’d like to avoid that if possible. I figure that if all the link info is already there then surely I must be able to reference it? If no-one has done this before then I might try and get down ‘n’ dirty with some php and try my hand at some plugins… Ultimately the motivation for this is to keep all the content management within one system rather than maintain two blogs for the one site.

Update – I have found a serious flaw in my plan. It seems that Links are not searchable from the default search form, so will be pretty useless if I ever want to find information again. Been thinking about it more overnight – even if I used a separate blog for my side minibar, wouldn’t that have implications for search as well? ie would you be able to search the miniblog while remaining in the same site and having the results come up along with the normal results from my site?

I would love to hear from anyone who has done this…
