Sidebar and widgets

I am using the Temper theme and it doesn’t seem to be integrating properly. Do I have to have a child theme to make the sidebar widgets and author profile work? The author box on the bottom of the listing works fine, just the right sidebar is missing If I buy the template add on will that cure the missing sidebar problem?
