I think it’s because we use a version of PHP less than 5.4 (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5966746/best-way-to-initialize-empty-array-in-php).
I’ll make a quick fix on 3.0.1 to help you and other people with PHP<5.4.

well, it fixed the error on the settings page, but it looks like it doesn’t work with the theme I’m using. No splash shows.
v2.7 used to work with another theme I had but that same v2.7 does not work with the new theme. So there is probably something missing or conflicting with my new theme. I’ll look into it. Thanks for fixing the error.
oh weird. apparently the cookie was already set so it didn’t show. It shows up now!
