Selectively moving posts to archives

Is there a way to tag a post to not show on the front page and to only show in the archives? In other words, I’m looking for a way to move selected posts to the archives before they naturally would based on the preferences (last 20 posts, last 10 days, whatever). I’ve looked through the plug in list, and run several searches here, but did not find anything.
Ideally, I’d like to check a box in edit posts to selectively control which posts are shown on the home page. However I don’t mind getting into the page code if I have to.
Any ideas? I could probably just edit dates to force it to work, but before I do that I thought I ask about a cleaner way to do it.
