Essentially I just want to have my search bar say something different than “Search.” I’ve dug through about a dozen “how to” articles that only focus on the default theme. No luck. I just can’t seem to locate the correct file to edit.

thanks for using MH Newsdesk lite.

If you want to edit the searchform, you would need to create a file searchform.php and modify the code as you like. Here you can find more information: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_search_form

Thanks for the response!

Am I correct in assuming that when I write and place this PHP file that the theme will automatically “read” it without needing to modify other files?

Yes, at the moment the theme is using the standard WordPress searchform and as soon as you have included your custom file for the searchform, that file will be used instead.
