I was wondering if you could explain a little bit about the Retina Support (wp-media-cleaner.php, lines 297+) that you’ve included here.

What does it do, and why is it necessary?

It just deletes the related retina files if the “normal” files aren’t in use. It works with the wp-retina-2x plugin.
