The exposure means whether you want to restrict content containing the specific categories (singular) or the category archives.
What exactly do you mean by the categories being shown? And can you tell me the name of the theme you are using?
Well, I wanted the categories to be restricted to only logged in users, but still visible in the menu. So if a guest sees the category link and clicks on it, they get a message that they need to register or login, or maybe they get redirected.
I am using the fungames theme. But I’ve actually sorted it now. Went with a different method, time was of the essence.
I have it set now that when a guest clicks on a restricted category, “PG13 Games” for example, they are redirected to the register page.

Your use case should be possible with the plugin, but of course there can be a compatibility issue with the theme and/or other plugins. I will look into it.
And great that you found a solution, even without this plugin.

I set this up using one of the default WP Themes: twentytwelve
I have a CPT and all posts to it get assigned a specific category.
I restricted specific CPT and the category. I created a custom page to redirect to with a “Sorry…” message for members with too low role.
I access the archive page from a menu item that links to the custom template archive page for that category.
Everything is still exposed when logged in with my test user who does not have privileges.
So far, the plugin is not working for me.

I have just created an admin account for you on my system. Please take a look at it when you can. I am unable to restrict my category called “Private” to only the administrator role. Logged out users (ie., web visitors) are able to see the “Private” category posts.
I’d let to have the system keep the category “Private” not visible to users not logged in.

I’m using a knowledgebase plugin (custom post type and custom taxonomy)
I setup a category for admins only, so client don’t see my admin panel tutorials.
The problem is that it’s displayed in the widget. Is there a setting to avoid diplaying it in the widget, or shall I create a custom menu to hide it?
if I create the menu, can I create it in a way that logged in admins can see the menu item (easier navigation, instead of having to remember the link)
