Requiring Email Validation

Is it possible to require the user to validate their email before logging in? I want it so that the user can choose their own password when they register, and a link is sent to the user’s email. They need to click on that link to activate their account. If the account is not activated, the user can’t log in. Else, the user is a normal user. Is this possible without plugins, or does this require an additional plugin?
