• I was recently hacked and I am unsure of how many of my wordpress files have been infected. I need to replace my WordPress installation with a fresh copy.

What I would like to do is the following:
    1. Make backup of content/uploads
    2. Make backup of database
    3. Erase entire site
    4. reinstall fresh wordpress, theme, and plugins (same versions as before)
    4. Replace content/uploads from backup
    5. Replace database from backup

    Will this work?

  • Since you don’t know how many files are infected, a backup created at this point could contain infected files. You don’t have a backup from before your site was hacked?

I do have a backup but I don’t know exactly when the infection took place, so I can’t be sure I’m not replacing an infected site with an infected backup.

All I will be keeping is my uploads, which are all image files, and my SQL database. I don’t think it’s possible that this stuff could be infected.

Have you tried running your site through securi to find what files are infected?

The method you suggested would work (I believe) but I’m trying to find a quicker, easier way to get your site back.

My site has been flagged for hacking by host and disabled, so I don’t think that scanner would work anymore. Great idea, though.

Good to know you think it would work.

    Oh boo!

Once you have your site back up and running, install a security plugin for your own sake. It’s much easier to prevent hacks than to clean up after it happens.
