Removing ‘category’ from wordpress URL’s

Hello.

I have been following many guides to removing ‘category’ from the page url, in particular, categories and ‘page’ urls, for example, domain.com/category/categoryname and domain.com/category/page/2.

This issue was a major flaw since version 2.0 which WordPress have been called out on, but have, as far as I know, not fixed the issue. (As there is one solution that does work, but only if ‘.html’ is appended to post url’s, which is far from ideal).

So, does anybody know how to remove ‘category’ from url’s using WordPress 2.5?
