Registration – waiting for password
-
i just had someone call me and say that they are trying to register to my blog. they have been waiting two days for a password via email. i told them to do it again but i will have to wait for that till tomorrow morning.
now i tried registering on another site and have been waiting ten minutes for my password.
my site is new and most of the users i have added myself and an email response is quick. shouldn’t all emails come in quickly? what is average wait time?

Should be under a minute. Have them check their spam folder. It may be in there. YOu also need to check your mail server’s logs to see if there’s any error in there.
dns had to be reconfigured. now a new issue.
right now anyone can comment on my site. to comment you have to leave your email address. (maybe no email should be required here, see below)
so, on monday jane makes a comment and leaves her email address as required by wordpress. on wednesday jane decides to register and must submit her email address to do so. wordpress refuses because there is an email address of jane already in the database.
to get a more in-depth picture of my site please refer to http://wordpress.org/support/topic/112891?replies=11
in summary currently,
1) if someone makes a comment and later decides to register, they can’t because their email address is already in the database. what to do?
2) if someone (typically a stranger) does register, they come in as a contributor since i don’t want them to have freedom of a author. once a poster has proven themselves, they get all the privledges of an author. and of course i am getting people registering and trying to post and i only get an email that they registered. i don’t know that they also want to post. thoughts?
i don’t think a plugin/wdiget is out there. this seems like a custom setup. right?
while waiting i’ve concluded the following in the short term = every visitor must register/login to comment, post, etc. and the default for these users = author. i don’t like this choice and may assemble a team of editors to monitor things 24×7. i am not for censored sites but well moderated sites are appreciated.
note: a minor tweak to wordpress/a plugin would make my site concept quite simple.
1) have two options for authors a) new author’s posts go to a moderator just like comments b) author’s in good standing can post with same rules currently in place
or
2) a) give contributors authority to post but go to moderation just like comments b) authors same rules currently in place.
i am going to propose this for next update…
also experimenting with two plugins 1) TDO mini-forms 2) role manager
any insight on this?
any advice? my question relates to prior conversation on this thread.
presently i am performing user testing on a blog. i have three people i know trying to register. they are not getting their passwords. they are in their 50s, marketing executives, are not technical, but they are on amazon, ebay, youtube, flickr, and netflicks quite a bit. they have no wordpress experience. i am a creative director with 30-plus years of experience. registering for these folks should not be so daunting.
on this particular blog there is register/password advice in the blog’s FAQ =
Question: I registered. How long does it take to get a password?
Answer: Less than one minute. It will arrive via the email address you used when you registered. If your password does not arrive check your bulk spam folder. Also do a search. Look for an email from wordpress@mydomaine.com. If you feel that you did not get a password use our Contact link and notify us.registering, providing comments and new content should be “cake” as in piece of cake.
if this area of the forum is not the best place to discuss improving the register process, or give me guidance, please let me know. has anyone else experienced registration issues?
I gave up on registration a few weeks ago when I started requiring it and then noticed that people using msn or hotmail accounts didn’t get their passwords at all.Plus I got dozens more emails from people using various accounts saying their passwords never arrived.I gave up and now simply moderate my site heavily to keep the filth out.
Yes, I am feeling your pain for sure. If this is prevalent, wonder why so few are experiencing this phenom as not many have commented on this thread.
That said, how can we improve the registration experience. Aside from the WP page not looking that good, it does not offer options to include custom text editing. On the page could be guidelines for password problems. Or space to write up compelling reasons to register. A great many sites do have really nice registration pages.
Can the existing WP registration page be replaced with a “page” that we can layout? Is this a WP function or something the theme designer has more control of? just realizing how easy it is to format “pages” with html and not having to touch style.css. on the surface a nice looking/functional registration page option seems easy but don’t know where to look on this one.
Bhoney, reread your comment. I looked at my three aforementioned wanna-register and note all are from aol. uh oh, msn, hotmail, aol = 70% of the non-commercial universe! hope this is just a coincidence. i don’t have user experience with boutique domains yet. something to do in the next few days.
again…i have someone, sam, (same person mentioned in this thread) who wants to register and contribute but the password does not seem to arrive. i have deleted sam as a user and have asked her register again to no avail. btw – pretty much everyone i have asked on this new site to register to test it, is having problems.
as an administrator, how can i give sam full author access to this site?
registration must not be a big problem because based on the activity of this thread = (only bhoney) it is no problem…
have you verified that mail() is working on your host?
Are you getting e-mails that TELL you that someone new has attempted to register?
my site is new and most of the users i have added myself and an email response is quick. shouldn’t all emails come in quickly?
What email response? If you add them yourself, you get an e-mail, they dont. So, youre talking about the e-mail you got, or what?
21 hours and there isnt a reply to my question(s).
whooami,
first of all, thanks for jumping into the pool on this one. also, it is 80 degrees in chicago this weekend. so i am outside.
when i as the admin creates a new user, i am notified via email that a new person has just registered.
when someone registers on their own, i am not notified of a new registration via email, however, the new user is registered. the user does not get a password via email.
when a non-registered someone makes a comment i am notified via email. then i have to authorize the posting.
note: i do have several plugins that offer email bells and whistles and have not deactivated to test the registration process. a possibility?
1) share this = works fine
2) subcribe to comments = works fine
3) secure and accessable php contact form = works fineThat’s strange.. I installed wordpress not too long back, and never received a confirmation email or whatever I am supposed to get with the API code or password.
I cant speak to your problem but would be interested in registering, to see if I get an e-mail.
whooami, you talking to me or mm232?
i am about to walk out the door and wont’ get to this until tomorrow
