Recent posts with excerpt

    How do I display the recent posts on index.php with the excerpt for each?
    I have this but it doesnt work, it only shows the last excerpt:

      <?php get_archives(‘postbypost’,’20’,’html’) ?>
      <?php the_excerpt(); ?>

    Any help?
