This problem has seemed to spring out of nowhere…

I haven’t made any changes to the permalink structure, site files, WP settings, etc but all of sudden I seem to be getting random 404 Errors when navigating through my site or the CSS will not work. This happens on multiple computers, whether I’m logged in or not. If I wait a minute or 2 & refresh, the site will load again as normal, only for the problem to spring up again after a couple of minutes…

I’ve gone through the forums and have yet to find a fix. I’ve disabled all the plugins & reverted to the TwentyTen theme, and still the issue is there. Since the issue still remains, I’m guessing it has to be something on the server side. But I haven’t made any changes to those settings (HTCaccess, etc)…

Is there something I’m missing in the server configuration or other? Any help would be much appreciated!

  • This can be a difficult one to answer. 404 error indicates that there was communication with the server ie no problem there but it could not load the file you were looking for.

I would suggest that you contact you host technical support about the 404 error. Do you know if your server response has been slow? Is it overloaded or are your hosting services doing some maintenance work. It could be temporary problem while they are doing some upgrades or repairs. Hardware does fail and needs to be repaired or replaced.

But before you do contact them you could run some test of your own http://tools.pingdom.com/ and run their tests. They have 3 sets of test (top of page) they have ‘full page test’and ‘DNS health’ and see what the results say.

I do hope this is helpful

As quickly as this problem appeared, it seems to have disappeared today… (knock on wood!)

I gave the hosting company a ring yesterday and explained my situation. They said they couldn’t find anything wrong, however I’m guessing they may have rebooted the server… who knows.

The site seems to working now. I’m almost certain it was something triggered on their end. I was making ALOT of updates to the site yesterday, so I’m guessing that had something to do with it.

Thanks for the link – I’ll run my site through that to see if anything pops up!
