    Hi

I want to change the Product permalink from
    /shop/%product_cat%/

    to
    /product/

What else do I need to do in Rank Math or other settings to guarantee that I have correct 301 redirections for the products?

    Hello @dounsa

    Thank you for your message.

You can do so from WordPress’s permalink settings:
    /wp-admin/options-permalink.php

We do not advise doing that on an established site.

URL structure is not a ranking factor.

People usually lose traffic when changing permalinks.

    Hope that helps.

I was looking for information about this. I just posted on the rank math group.

I wanted to get rid of the SHOP base slug to make URL shorter.

This is the first time I hear that URL structure is not a ranking factor… Do you have an article about that?

    Hello @eybel

    Please consult this article:
    https://moz.com/learn/seo/url

    Especially, this section:

While using a URL that includes keywords can improve your site’s search visibility, URLs themselves generally do not have a major impact on a page’s ability to rank. So, while it’s worth thinking about, don’t create otherwise unuseful URLs simply to include a keyword in them.

With that said, we mentioned that the URL Structure is not a ranking factor. We are not debating the presence of a keyword in the URL.

    What that means is:

    This URL: example.com/some-random-text-with-primary-keyword/more-randomness-ensues/actual-target-keyword/

Has the same chance of ranking in the search engines as this one: example.com/actual-target-keyword/

The second one is obviously more cleaner, user-friendly, less spammy, and more rememberable.

Moreover, the benefits of having a short URL are nullified or even reversed when you change the permalink structure on an established website. That is because having redirects in place takes a long time to pass all the authority and in some cases, the traffic never returns to pre-permalink-change time. So, we only recommend fiddling with permalinks if you have a new website or you can risk losing a certain percentage of your traffic in hopes of creating clearer, shorter URLs.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.
