• I tried to update two plugins this morning. The updates were for WPForms Lite and Ocean Extra. I usually wait about a week to install plugins to avoid doing them too often since there are often newer updates available within one or two days. Everything appeared normal – WordPress was put into maintenance mode and the update of one or other started. Then … nothing. It just sat there. After a really abnormal amount of time I tried to log into the admin again and got a message saying the site was in maintenance mode so I’m really stuck. Since then I have had to get my server provider to re-install yesterday’s backup twice because I am having trouble trying to get the site back with a Duplicator backup. This seems to fail with a timeout problem. So I’m really at my wit’s end!! Any ideas or help would be really appreciated.

When you’re stuck in maintenance mode, delete the file ‘.maintenance’ in the site’s root via FTP or your hosting control panel.

Thanks for that. Now I just have to work out why the update(s) failed and why I can’t restore from a backup!! Happy days until now.
