    Actually 2.7.1 on the version.

We’re installing WordPress 2.7.1 for the first time on http://www.rknstudio.com. We are getting the initial install screen fine (and enter the database name and email address,) but then we are getting a 404 page. The web url at the error is /install.php?step=2

    Any ideas?

Might want to check your upload and make sure all files and directories are there. The missing Logo image on the first page is a bad omen… Also,
    http://www.rknstudio.com/install.php
doesn’t appear to exist — or if it does exist you have some IIS permissions to sort out.

Thanks for the quick reply. I counted the number of files in the download directory and our hosted site and, at the root level anyway, the number of files is the same.

~/install.php is not in the root folder, but in the wp-admin/ folder. From the downloaded files (for WordPress), the install.php is not located in the root folder. (should it be? – maybe that’s our problem)

Also, we couldn’t use ‘localhost’ for our install as my provider has MySql in a differnet location. But that shouldn’t make a difference, right? I mean, we get to the initial install page – it just doesn’t continue past that part.

We’re on a win-doze box (provider says it should be fine) – does it make that much of a difference?

Thanks so much for your help.

So much for me being useful when half-asleep.

OK, rewind. What happens when you start from http://www.rknstudio.com/wp-admin/ ?

As for the IIS thing: in general you’ll be OK, but you may or may not run into issues with some plugins.

I’m not sure what you mean by that, the install page is on the main page which is what SHOULD be there since it hasn’t been installed yet.

    It isn’t http://www.rknstudio.com/install.php it’s http://www.rknstudio.com/wp-admin/install.php

and enter the database name and email address

You don’t enter the database name on the install screen you enter the blog name. Don’t know if that might be part of the problem or not.

But that shouldn’t make a difference, right?

Yes it does make a difference. You have to have the host linked correctly for things to work correctly.

    Thanks Chris_K and Thisisedie.

Going to the ~/wp-admin location ran everything properly. Although the directions I read (mis-read?) seemed to state to go to the URL home and things should run from there…

I’m sorry I meant to say I entered the blog name *not* the DB name (I guess I’m tired a bit too!)

I’m concerned with the potentially negative windows comments. If windows for wordpress is a legitimate concern, please let me know (truly) and I will ask my provider to switch me to a linux platform. Is this worth the downtime and (any apparent) headache?

Thanks again. I do appreciate the speedy replies!

I personally feel that linux is a much better option all the way around and WP likes it better. WordPress and windows often times have a conflict of interests lol.

[Fortunately I’m sure Thisisedie saw my subsequent post after his. As mentioned, I goofed on my initial response.]

As for IIS… I ran a WP blog hosted on an IIS server for quite some time several years back. I believe most of the issues I had back then are no longer issues as they’ve been addressed over time.

You could search the forums for “IIS” but keep an eye on the dates of the threads and ask yourself if you’re likely to be running that plugin or doing whatever the issue is… in general it does work but folks aren’t as experienced supporting it so you may get some comments over time 😉
