Today I got my first Poster Spam.

On my blog, anyone can register and today, someone with a drug name registered and posted the marvels of their drug.

    Cute, huh?

I deleted it. I adjusted the settings so users can draft articles but not post. It’s weird and never happened before. Looks like spammers are getting more sophisticated.

  • Actually, the single-instance spamming method is about as old as the Net itself. Anyone with some experience in network news on the old UUCP networks could tell you that (and just did).

Just how “sophisticated” does one have to be when a blog owner allows anyone to register?

    Not very I should think.

Well then I must be moving up in the world because it’s never happened to me. I even did a quick search on Google and no one talks about it – the dirty secret to those of us only blogging for 3 years.

Comment spam I used toget by the bucketful – 300 in a single day once. Spam Karma killed that.

    But this… wow.

Gee, Marc, it’s never been a problem before. I have a lot of posts that I keep under my hat to registered users only.

Like I said, it’s never been a problem before.

Excuse me for airing something I found interesting, since I didn’t see it posted anywhere on this forum.

Next time, I’ll just keep it to myself.

Penda, I didn’t say it wasn’t new to blogging, but having someone visit a site (or system), register on it, and submit spam has been around for quite awhile. Also keep in mind a blog with open registration and posting is not a common thing, so spammers hitting blogs this way will not be a common occurence, as well.

    As for Marc’s comments…

    And your point is…

If you leave your door open, trouble will follow. (as you noted yourself) Pure and simple. The length of someone time blogging has little to do with it.

It’s called common sense. An all to uncommon trait I’m afraid.
