You can see via FTP that all the plugins are gone?
If you haven’t made any backups yourself you should ask your webhost if they have a backup prior to the “vanishing.”
There was a backup plugin, but of course that too is now gone…
Yes the plugins directory is empty.
I am having a nervous collapse!
I will be asking web host re backup but if they do it will be an old one.
Is there any way to “undo” FTP?
No, FTP is the real deal. I don’t know of anyway to undo it. I’ve had my plugins “disappear” through my WP Admin, but the folder was really there when I looked via FTP.
A lot of web hosts will have daily and weekly backups, so you may get most of your work back.
Regarding the backup plugin, it is a good idea to setup database backups to be emailed to you on a regular basis.
I still cannot fathom how they vanished… I didn’t delete them all.
There should be a warning box asking me am i sure i want to delete this plugin.
This didn’t happen
I’m using filezilla
How could uploading one plugin somehow overwrite (and wipe out) all the others?
Did you see anything in your filezilla logs? I have filezilla to ask before it overwrites or deletes anything. I have no idea how that could have happened.
Did your web host have a backup?
This is how things went wrong:
I uploaded a captcha plugin with FTP to plugins folder
BUT despite it uploading I could not find it in plugins folder (i dont know why)
I then tried to upload it again by dropping it into the plugins directory.
There was overwrite warning BUT I assumed this was re the previous upload. So I ticked box to not warn my again (probably my big mistake)
I must have somehow overwritten all the other plugins with this one plugin.
Yet to me (a novice) this seems very strange and deeply frustrating.
If this is what happened it is a harsh lesson learnt, small errors are severely punished!
I hope to find out in a few hours if web host has a backup.
