Have you tried:
– deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
– switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.
– re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder and wp-config.php & root .htaccess files – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

Thanks for the advice esmi, this is helpful in getting the plugins reinstated. However, I’m curious to know what might have caused this. I have this and a few other WP sites and never this kind of problem before. I wonder if the latest auto update to WP 3.9.1 could have caused this. Apart from posting, there have been no other changes to the site for some time.
Picking up on your 1st point, how would I recognise a “problematic plugin”?

The update generally shouldn’t have caused this problem but it is possible that there was a hiccup on your site during the upgrade which caused this.

If you turn all plugins off and then switch them on on-by-one whilst monitoring the relevant area of the site, you would see that reactivating a “problem plugin” would cause your issue to re-appear. Thus you would now have a pretty good idea where the root issue is.
