• Hi there

I have corrupted the back end of my site and I’m not able to login or register. The site still works though. I’ve been advised to re-install everything on my site to start with a fresh wordpress installation.

Unfortunately, whilst I have been able to download my files from your backup site, I don’t have the encryption key as it was stored on a HDD that was since been corrupted and replaced.

Is there anyway of getting a replacement key please? Happy to go through security checks, etc.

    Thanks
    Nicky

    Hi Nicky,

I’m afraid if you cannot locate the encryption details there is nothing we can do. We don’t know or keep anywhere the encryption keys, so users know that we wouldn’t be able to access the data they have stored on our servers even if we wanted to.

The plugin tries to make this clear:

ATTENTION! DO NOT LOSE YOUR ENCRYPTION DETAILS!
Just remember, your backups can NEVER be recovered if you forget these details.
Therefore, it is IMPERATIVE that you write them down somewhere. Please do not contact us regarding lost encryption details… there is absolutely nothing we can do.

Sorry I couldn’t be of any more help.

    Jason.

Thanks for getting back to me. I read one of the other posts on here about how you set your own code. I think I know what it is.

Is there a step by step guide as to how to implement a back then? I downloaded two files: files/folders and the DB from my backup account but when I unzipped the files/folders one to do a restore there was no .ENC file in it?

    Thanks

    Hi Nicky,

    You downloaded two files?

If you login to wordpress.backup-technology.co.uk you should be able to generate a snapshot (it will be a the bottom of the page which shows Filesystem and Database folders.)

This will be a single ZIP file that gives you all the files you need.

We don’t encrypt the files individually and only encrypt the entire archive, so if you downloaded a ZIP file, it wasn’t encrypted, so you don’t need to worry about decrypting it. The files will be readable.

Thanks. So basically, I upload the Zipped file to the specific folder mentioned in the plugin by FTP (its over 12MiB)?

    Cheers

    Hi Nicky,

What’s the filename? Does it end in .ZIP?
Can you extract the contents without decrypting it?

Yeah, its a .ZIP file and I can extract and see what files are in there and open them.

    Hi Nicky,

You should be able to delete the files from your website and the database and use the contents of the ZIP file to replace everything.

The decrypt a backup page in the plugin is only for decrypting, and you don’t need to do this as you never had the backup encrypted (or it was already decrypted.) The plugin doesn’t offer the ability to automate the restore of the files though. The recovery is a manual procedure involving FTP for the filesystem and phpMyAdmin for the database. We do it this way because an automated procedure can very easily go wrong and make things worse.

Your backup file will contain one or more folders, such as ‘Database’ and ‘Filesystem’. The filesystem folder will contain the files from your WordPress installation and can simply be uploaded to your web host. The database folder will contain a MySQL file that can be imported via phpMyAdmin (already installed on most commercial web servers) into a new empty database to recreate the WordPress database as it was at the time of backup.

    Hope this helps,

    Jason
