[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Nextgen Gallery featured image doesn't replace header

The nextgen gallery is working perfectly except for integrating with the custom header feature of my site. The template is supposed to grab the first image from a post and make it the header image when you view the individual post. It does this perfectly as long as the photos in the post were uploaded using the built in media manager. As soon as I try to designate a nextgen image as the featured image, it doesn’t work. Has anyone else run into this problem or have a solution? I have seen suggestions that the problem is in nextgen’s creation of thumbnail images, but nothing specific that I could try to remedy.
