I’m having the same problem in creating thumbnails!
In other threads someone solved by switching from php4 to php5 but my server is already in php5!
This is what I get:

I tried load images bu ~100Kb.
Now when i try load image i already get message:
ERROR HTTP ERROR : IMGP1559.JPG : 403
Alex my images are very small, 600×400 and less than 70k!
This could have various resons,currently I have no idea. Disable other plugins, switch to the default theme, if this doesn’t help and you have a higher memory limit that 32 MB you can contact me by mail, will try to debug that on your server
might have figured this out. Getting error division by zero on line 760. Looked at the code and saw it was processing the jpeg camera metadata. looked at the file and lo and behold the f stop and some other settings were set to zero. (usually they can’t be that low). So I think some bad data got in there from some old scans or something.
Stripped the data (in a pinch you can just copy paste the image into a new photoshop window and re-save) and then re-uploaded and nggallery worked like a charm…

I have been seraching all the nextgen fora until now.
But still:
– also with an image 20×16 pix , 960 bites (60 kb on disk) it is not working.
– server safe mode = off
– strange thing: it worked fine unther a test/directory. It only started to bug when I placed the site unther the root.
– gallery options are ok: because new images load in the correct directory.. only thumbs are not working.
(I can upload the thumbs, after I created theem manually and then it works ok. But my client can’t..)
– Uploading images works fine: the upload in the correct directory.
… help…
Resolved for me:
– backup gallery
– uninstall nextgen
– ! delete manually all the nextgen tables in Mysql db
– install plugin
– manually create all calleries
– import by ftp all gallery pictires and thumbs
– set permissions and disable flash upload
