My advice is never upload full size images. You are asking for these kind of problems when you do.
Always pre-process your images to 1024px (max side) and I would also recommend an 85% jpeg quality. I use Picassa to do this. That way your images will be lower in size, and download time will be improved.
The quality presented on the screen will be essentially the same.

At Kevin, that is what I am doing now but I guess I am wondering why all of a sudden this is happening. For over a year I have not had to do this and now, bam.
