• Hi, I have been using the same permalinks structure for a while now:

    /%category%/%postname%

If you look at http://www.webdesignerwall.com/ you will see this site uses the same. But now they dont work. Has the rules changes sine the release of 2.8.4? Because now the closest I can get is using: /index.php/%category%/%postname% but it doesnt look as good.

  • Is webdesignerwall.com yours? If not, can you provide an URL?

No unfortunetly webdesignerwall isnt mine! Here is an example of what works and what doesnt.

    http://northlandkenpo.co.nz/
    WordPress 2.7.1
    Permalinks: /%category%/%postname%
    Result: works good!

    http://calders.co.nz/wptest/
    WordPress 2.8.4
    Permalinks: /%category%/%postname%
    Result: 404 error

    Cheers.

    But which one is yours?!?!?!?!

If that calders one is yours, you’ve got to have a .htaccess file for permalinks to work and it looks like there isn’t one. I get a file-not-found error instead of a you-don't-have-permission error when I try.

Thanks for your reply. Both the sites in the example above are sites i have made.

I have created a .htaccess file in the root of the wordpress installtion
http://calders.co.nz/wptest/.htaccess and changed the permisons of this file to 666. But its still not working – have i put the file in the correct directory?

I am very new. This is so simple but I can’t fix it. I have permalinks set on default and when I click on a page from my site I get “oops! this link appears to be broken”. There isn’t anything much on the pages because I am trying to fix the links before I add content. I will also need to know how to link the pages back to the main site. Thanks for anyone’s time to help me! : )

@electricfan: A link to your site would help…

Are you talking about the list of ‘photo ideas’ on the right hand side? If so, have you made that list by inserting links manually into the sidebar, or is WordPress generating that for you?

I inserted links manually into the sidebar, but I am so new, maybe that was wrong?

Yeah, you should really allow those links to be generated by WordPress, as it’ll then know to make the page it links to and you won’t get a 404 error. πŸ™‚

If I were you, I’d revert back to the original theme (upload a fresh copy of the original if you need to). Play about with adding categories, add a few dummy posts and pages and just have a play with your new toy to see what it all does. You’ll learn quite a lot just with playing with the ‘out of the box’ version. After you’ve finished seeing what WordPress is all about, just delete any dummy posts etc and start building proper.

    I’ll try that. Thanks.
