Permalinks do not work?

    Hello everyone!
    I am new to wordpress, and am facing a rather difficult situation.

    Where I am working at, I am relocating the site for the company.

    It’s only accessible by IP as of now. It doesn’t have the domain assigned yet. We don’t want to flip the domain URL over until after testing.

    I tried plain permalinks, and it won’t connect to any of the pages I restored. I tried the original %postname% permalink, and it continues to complain that it does not exist as a page.

    I ran the replacement command in MySQL via Terminal (through Putty) for wp_posts and wp_postmeta… Regardless of what link structure I use, I have always seen the landing static page.

    It’s not theme related, as I used twentysixteen as part of troubleshooting.

    I also adjusted the permalinks: deleted .htaccess as I went.

    With everything I tried, I keep clearing my cache to ensure it’s not loading bad information.

    I just want to know how to configure / troubleshoot so we can use ipaddress/aboutus/ and such… then flip it for the actual domain when we go live with this relocated site.

    Hi, mjvnsdl, & welcome to the WordPress support forum.

    What I do in situations like this is to actually run a search-&-replace in the database, making the url’s adhere to the domain structure. Then I modify the hosts file on my computer such that the IP corresponds to that domain name. WordPress doesn’t much like IP urls, I’ve found from experience, & this has been the way that’s worked out best for me, at any rate. Maybe someone else here will have better advice to offer, but I’ve been doing WordPress as well as hosting for 6 years now, & both my clients & I seem to have the best success in this way.
