Prior to version 1.1.0 of LifterLMS PayPal the only way to manage recurring payments is with the use of reference transactions. We changed this in 1.1.0 to allow “manual” recurring payments which allow students to make a new one-time payment each time a recurring payment is due.

So the issue here is that you’re using a very old and outdated version of the codebase.
You’ll want to get upgraded to the latest version to see this issue resolved through the new features added in 1.1.0.
