password protected pages error404

    Hi there,
    I can’t use a password to protect a page without the error 404 coming up even when I use the correct password.
    It seems to be something to do with some coding somewhere? Functions php perhaps?
    Any advice? Other postings come up with explanations I cannot understand.
    It seems to be a common problem. It first occured when i added a 2nd password protected page (a child of a parent page).
