Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in …

I’ve read through the various parse error forum posts and I don’t see anything like what’s currently happening in my site.

When I go to the home page, http://www.paws-and-effect.com, I get this message: Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/content/j/a/n/janea/html/wp-load.php on line 46

When I try to access the site through the admin panel I get this message: Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/content/j/a/n/janea/html/wp-login.php on line 497

I wouldn’t mind tooling around in whatever parts of the code need to have the $ removed, but I don’t know what parts those are and I don’t want to completely bugger the site!
