parent page specific items

Greetings all, still newish to wordpress I am using it as a CMS for a client.

I’m using list_pages to generate a list for my navigation. I have 7 top level navigation items, that have children, and children of those children.

On each of the top (parent) pages, I want to have a different image that features in the header. I’ve been searching and haven’t found a simple way to do it, short from changing the template on all the parent and children pages.

This seems like it should be simple, is it?
