numbering archives

on my blog site I have set the “blog pages how at most” under Reading to 4 so that only 4 blogs show on my home page. When the posts scroll over that amount I get links at the bottom of the posts that show “older posts” and “newer posts”.

Is there a way to show page numbers or archive posts by category? As the number of posts grows it will be difficult for a visitor to navigate thru the existing links to find old posts.
