No FTP Directory for WordPress!
-
Alright guys, this is probably the most frustrating thing I’ve faced, and I used to be a regular html website fanatic before.
I’ll try to emphasize everything fast.
I have a 1AND1 domain. (http://www.locktrap.com)
I used their “make quick website/blog” thing/option, because i wanted to see how it works. I ended up using wordpress through their service and gradually made the site. I had never even looked at the FTP directory for this site, for wordpress. I just kept going through the ADMIN section through the website itself. (locktrap.com)
Now I want to install plugins, but THERE IS NO DIRECTORIES ON FTP FOR THIS WEBSITE. When i log in to an ftp client with the information to go into the directory of my site, there is no folders, no files, no NOTHING for this website inside of the directory. Is this because I’ve been using and working with wordpress ONLINE? Rather than through an FTP?
I would like to SOMEHOW make me see this directory through an FTP client, but i cant see anything! 🙁
The main reason i want to do this is because I want to install PLUGINS, and every wordpress help site says something like, “UPLOAD YOUR PLUG IN INTO THE DIRECTORY, wp-content (or wp-admin) / plugins . But i dont even have any folders! WTF right? lol..im so confused.
Can anyone PLEASE help me resolve this dumb question once and for all. Thanks alot.

Various hosts create directories that have no semblance to the files within, for instance one I was working on recently was nothing more than a string of letters and numbers – /wsb65tfr456
Further investigation revealed that this was created by the host and housed the files. So, try looking for something like that first. There are further options if that is unsuccessful.
You should be able to just log into your wordpress admin interface, Click Options.
What is defined for WordPress address (URL): ?Your plugins can be uploaded by your FTP client to <thatlocation>/wp-content/plugins

what do u suggest i do? look into my domain host and see if the files are hosted somewhere? I’ve checked that, i cant find anything inside of the adminstration for my host, in relation to my ftp files. just the information to log on into an ftp for that site. (ex.user name, pass, ect.)
arcater:
by going into the wordpress admin and clicking options, the URL is this: http://locktrap.com/wp-admin/options-general.php
how do i upload it into an FTP when the ftp contains no folders and files for this site?
I used their “make quick website/blog” thing/option,
That was your mistake, sorry.
Never use their onw “blog” gizmo, it is a totally screwed up WP modification. If it is a new blog, delete it and do a regular manual installation!moshu:
is there a way to backup all the content on my website through wordpress? is it under the MANAGE section in admin, and than EXPORT section? to export all the content. posts, categories, and ect?
As well, if i just then install wordpress manually, and make it through an ftp, than everything will be corrected?
If you used their blog gizmo… probably, that’s the only way you can back it up (export) – as far as I remember on the blogs made by their on-click idiocy there is no way to access the mysql database.
Make sure you install the same version as you have now (you can upgrade it later).
Follow this:

You may also want to search for topics in this forum that discuss installing on 1and1 (nothing is normal at that host). After the install is completed you go to Manage > Import and import with the file you got from the export.
That should work.
hey thanks alot moshu. well the hosting thing was kinda the reason there was no directories and ect. . so i figured it all out, from the link u gave me.
now that, that is out of the way. since you’re so good at helping out. i got another question for you that you could probably easily fix.
Look at this site.. WebeBlogs.com
I tried to used the static and posts option in the options and than reading section. When i make the FRONT PAGE to my page that is called MAIN
and
when i make the POSTS PAGE to my page that is called NEWS FLASH,for some reason. there are TWO MAIN PAGES, when displayed.
is this have to do with something about the index.php file? This problem has been consistent on other sites i’ve tried it with. All i want is to make my page that is MAIN, the front page that displays, and everytime i make a new post (WRITE), that it to be posted on the NEWS FLASH page. Can you or anyone else help me?
