I recently installed and run W3 Total cache and autoptimize on my website,
    http://www.easyrootcanal.com
with very good results in terms of speed but I missed some functionality:
The nextgen gallery on the case gallery page lost the option to go from one thumbnail to the next or previous one; you have to go back to page and click on the next image.
Any advice on how to restore this?
Bear in mind I am not a programmer but a low profile worpress user.
I suspect autoptimize is the no 1 suspect cause i set W3 total cache to the bare minimum, according to several tutorials.

  • Hi aiffront;
I’m autoptimize’s developer. Start by ticking the “force JS in head”-option on the autoptimize settings-page, that most likely will fix everything. If not you can also try adding “jquery.js, galleries.gallery, static/slideshow” (without quoes) to the comma-seperated “exclude from JS optimization”-field.

    Hope this helps,
    frank

    thanks for the prompt reply.
Tried both suggested fix but no luck.
I also lost the ability to attach files in the Contact form 7 plugin
It seems that when compressing html, JS, and Css, something gets lost in the process.
Removing the affected plugins and reinstall them will fix it?

removing & reinstalling plugins won’t fix this I’m afraid. optimization can be tricky and may require (sometimes advanced) configuration to get everything working. you can refer to the quite extensive FAQ for more into.

in your case, most problems are very likely caused by JS optimization, so if you want to go the easy route, you can disable that.

regarding NGG; what slider/ lightbox are you using? I might have a go at it myself tomorrow & report back here.

    kind regards,
    frank

Tried to disable js optimization completely and still no change.
I am using nexgen basic thumbnails, and originally shutter lightbox, but no matter what I do with the settings it just shows a single image with no control buttons and only the options of using the back button on the browser to go back to the page.
Regarding Contact form 7 I can send and receive messages but no attach files: when I try to select the files to be attched it just copies the file name but no the path to locate it.
If I remove the interested plugins and install new ones with similar functionality, recreating a new image gallery on the page, and a new contact form, is it gonna work?
Please do not tell me that after autoptimize I cannot install new plugins or add other functionality to the website?
    Sorry for the dumb questions…
I am going to spend the next hours on the FAQ you suggested but seems
optimization is a crazy beast…yous should warn user to use the plugin just if they are experienced developers…

Re-Installing plugins will work just fine, but it won’t solve your optimization problems.

If your problems persist after deactivating JS optimization, you most likely have a page cache that needs to be cleared.

I’ll have a look at this on my test blog tomorrow, but all going to catch some sleep first.

    Thanks Frank.
Appreciate the help. knowing that, worse case scenario, I can go back to the website state preoptimization is a relief. I can catch some sleep too!
After all the attempted adjustments I always hit the “clear all cache button” on W3 total cache, where I have activated the “cache pag”e and “cache browser” options. I will be waiting for your advice on how to fix those issues or at least how to go back to pre optimizatin state.
    Alf

    Hi Alf;
Sleeping helps; when using NextGen Galleries you have to check the “keep comments”-option (as NGG inserts a comment as an indicator where to insert JavaScript at a later stage). That, combined with previously discribed solutions, should fix most issues (with the upcoming AO 1.9.3 you won’t have to “keep comments” any more).

I’ll quickly give ContactForm7 a test as well.

    kind regards,
    frank

And regarding ContactFrom7; I did a quick test and it just seems to need jquery.js to be excluded from optimization (assuming you’ve enabled the “keep comments” when also using NGG).

(sorry NGG-guys & girls, this seems to have become an autoptimize-support-thread instead)

    Frank,
thank you very much for your committment to help.
I used the set up suggested.
The Contact form 7 seems to be working fine now. Great relief.
The nextgen gallery used in the “case gallery” page still no improvement:
maybe you want to check how it looks

Is there an image gallery plugin that I can use as an alternative that has been tested with autoptimize? Is not a lot of work to reload the images on the page.
I start thinking it takes more than my actual ability to copy and paste pieces of codes following instructions to troubleshoot this issue.
It is a pity because the site is much faster…

Sorry for the mess with the link button

I do occasional tests with NGG and have it working on my test-blog without a hitch, but it mainly depends on what NGG-options you have active Alf and depending on that you would have to configure AO differently.

Based on what I see, in your case you might need to add “fancybox” to the comma-seperated lists of JS to exclude from optimization.

    THAT DID THE TRICK!!!
I added the “shutter” to the list of jquery to exclude and the commandands are back.
That is what I call technical support!
Now, considering that following your advice I also added:
    “jquery.js, galleries.gallery, static/slideshow”
and had all the js options enabled and the keep comments too,
what is your advice regarding how to keep the maximum amount of optimization? remove one by one and check what happens, or there are options to leave active for sure?
I know I am a dumb head, but after all this trouble I am trying to maximize my gain.

FOR ALL HAVING TROUBLES WITH NEXTGEN GALLERY AND AUTOPTIMIZE theese are the settings that worked for me:

    Optimize HTML : enable
    Keep HTML comments : enable
    Optimize java scripts : enable
Exclude scripts from Autoptimize : add the following to the string:
jquery.js,galleries.gallery,static/slideshow,shutter (in my case shutter as lightbox in NGG )
    Optimize CSS code : enable
    Save aggregate scripts… : enable

Many Thanks to Frank Goossens for being patient enough to help somebody who is not really competent.
I will leave a positive reviews

what is your advice regarding how to keep the maximum amount of optimization? remove one by one and check what happens, or there are options to leave active for sure?

you’ll want to keep HTML comments (at least until 1.9.3 comes out, later this week) and exclude jquery.js for sure, the others you can play around with to see if they’re really needed.

and thanks for sharing your config, that indeed will help others as well! šŸ™‚

    kind regards,
    frank
