Newbie needs help !

    Okay, first, I’m going to apologise for the questions I’m asking because they probably have been asked before or is actually something very easy to solve.

    The thing is, I’ve recently joined a school blogging contest and the account given to me was a WordPress account. For all my life I’ve been using blogspot and not wordpress so I have no idea at all how to use wordpress.

    So I started tinkering around with the themes and such, and I realise it’s completely different from the format I’m used to on blogger.

    I read a few tips and tutorials stuff about how to install layouts, but they aren’t much help at all, because I don’t even know how to locate my “host” or “FTP server”.

    I desperately need help here, as our deadline is on 31st May 2007, and my team is going to be dead if we don’t even know how to access the layout. Can anyone please help me?

    Is your blog hosted on your own server, or is it hosted on wordpress.com? As in, is your blog’s URL ‘something.wordpress.com’?

    What is expected of you with regard to this assignment? Is it about blogging? If so, just pick a nice WP theme (there are plenty of nice themes out there) and don’t worry so much about tinkering with the design; worry more about the content that you are expected to produce .. if that’s the case.

    If I were your instructor, I guess I would expect you to be able to install and configure the blog app., select, install and configure plugins, change the theme around SLIGHTLY (not necessarily a wholesale redesign), modify the sidebar code and footer, and create some good blog posts. Do research, create links, give credit when citing to another blog, all the things that make you a model citizen in the (and boy do I hate this word, but no other one will do) blogosphere.

    Generally we are supposed to blog in Chinese, but one of the categories of the competition is “Best Creativity”, which means creating our own blogskin.

    My group wanted to enter the category as I was able to design blogskins for Blogspot.

    And my main problem is that I have no idea even how to use a premade WP theme, much less make one. I’ve tried following the tips on the forum and Codex, but failed to understand it.

    To summarise some points of my problem:
    1. I have no idea how to download filezilla.
    2. I can’t locate the WP directory and so on.

    If it is possible for you to answer a few questions, I may be able to help.

    1. Did you install WordPress to the link you provided?
    2. You say you created a “skin” for BlogSpot, does this mean you know CSS/HTML?
    3. Do you have an FTP program, and an FTP Username/Password for the URL you provided above.
